Styrene acrylic emulsion, commonly known as styrene-acrylic emulsion, is an aqueous emulsion formed by copolymerizing styrene and acrylate monomers. It is mainly used as a film-forming substance in water-based architectural coatings. Due to its high cost-effectiveness and balanced performance, it is widely available in the market.
It is essentially a copolymer made through emulsion polymerization of styrene and acrylate monomers, and its appearance is generally milky white or nearly transparent viscous liquid. In the acrylic emulsion family, it belongs to the "styrene-acrylic" type, and is in parallel relationship with pure acrylic emulsion, silicone-acrylic emulsion, etc. However, due to the addition of styrene segments, its hardness and water resistance are better than pure acrylic emulsion, while its cost is lower than silicone-acrylic emulsion.
Advantages
High cost-effectiveness: The price is much lower than that of pure acrylic lotion and silicone acrylic lotion;
It exhibits excellent water resistance, alkali resistance, and scrub resistance, making it highly suitable for concrete and cement mortar substrates;
The pigment exhibits strong carrying capacity and good filling property in coatings;
Water-based system, low VOC, environmentally friendly and safe, meeting domestic environmental standards for coatings;
Formula adjustable: By adjusting the monomer ratio to alter the glass transition temperature (Tg), it can be used to produce hard coatings or highly elastic coatings;
The adhesive film is dense and transparent, with strong adhesion to cement, metal, paper, and fabric
Good adhesion: High bonding strength, capable of adhering well to various substrate surfaces such as masonry, wood, steel, etc.
Main application areas
1. Architectural coatings (the largest application, accounting for nearly 70%) include interior wall latex paint, ordinary exterior wall latex paint, putty, cement primer, floor coating, real stone paint, and waterproof mortar modifier; interior walls are fully applicable; for ordinary exterior walls, modified styrene-acrylic emulsion is recommended, while for high-end exterior walls, pure acrylic emulsion is preferred.
2. Adhesive industry: paper coating adhesive, paper sizing agent, starch adhesive compounding auxiliary agent, non-woven fabric adhesive;
3. Industrial coatings: water-based metal primer, wood primer, and water-based ink binder;
4. Textile industry: coating printing adhesive, fabric softening agent;
5. Others: leather auxiliaries, concrete sealants, gypsum modifiers.
Product Classification
1. General-purpose styrene-acrylic lotion: mainly used for interior wall latex paint;
2. Weather-resistant modified styrene-acrylic lotion (core-shell structure): reduces the tendency for yellowing, suitable for exterior walls;
3. Highly elastic styrene-acrylic lotion: low Tg, used for elastic waterproof coating;
4. Cationic styrene-acrylic lotion: suitable for paper fixing and metal anti-corrosion primer;
5. APEO Free, environmentally friendly: free of alkylphenol emulsifiers, suitable for export products and high-end interior wall coatings
Safety precautions
1. The original solution is non-flammable, but the dried polymer powder is flammable;
2. The original solution has low irritation, so avoid splashing it into your eyes;
3. Discarded lotion cannot be directly discharged and should be treated as water-based chemical wastewater; the finished coating is non-toxic and safe after drying.
