Dispersants achieve stability through electrostatic stabilization or steric hindrance. The two basic requirements for stable steric hindrance are that the anchoring group has sufficient adsorption force on the pigment, and the solvation chain segment, also known as steric hindrance steric hindrance chain segment.
It is completely dissolved in this medium, and the steric hindrance effect can only be strengthened when the polymer chains break and can be well dissolved or appropriately unfolded in the resin. But if the compatibility is poor, this polymer chain segment will fold and then entangle with each other, and the steric hindrance effect will be lost.
So the compatibility between dispersants, base materials, and solvent systems is crucial. The compatibility of the same dispersant varies greatly in different resin systems. The numerical system can be roughly divided into the following types. The first one is the low-level lipid system, usually referring to a system with polarity between aliphatic hydrocarbons and xylene, mainly composed of aliphatic solvents. The second type is a medium polarity resin system, usually referring to a system with polarity between xylene and alcohol ether solvents. Its solvent system is mainly composed of benzene, esters, and ketones, and the vast majority of our solvent based coatings are of this type. The third type is high polarity or water-based systems, mainly alcohol soluble systems, water-soluble systems, and pure water-based resin systems.
With the development of environmentally friendly coatings, the proportion of this system in coatings is also increasing. Each coating with a polarity range requires a corresponding polar dispersant to match it. Dispersants can only exhibit their optimal effects when used in systems that match the limit range. And it is also necessary to comprehensively select different types of anchoring groups and dispersants with different numbers of anchoring groups based on the condition and cost-effectiveness of the pigment.
