NP is prepared from nonylphenol and ethylene oxide (EO), and nonylphenol comes from propylene and phenol. Nonylphenol containing active hydrogen atoms reacts with ethylene oxide under alkaline catalytic conditions to form ether nonionic surfactants: the more ethylene oxide is added, the more hydrophilic the polymer is.
